STOCQUELER, Joachim Hayward. - Lot 240
STOCQUELER, Joachim Hayward.
Fifteen months' pilgrimage through untrodden tracts of Khuzistan and Persia, in a journey from India to England, through parts of Turkish Arabia, Persia, Armenia, Russia, and Germany [...] in the years 1831 and 1832.
London, Saunders and Otley, 1832.
2 volumes in-12, (4)-XII-263 pp. and (2)-V-228 pp. with 2 frontispieces and an engraved map.
Contemporary bottle chagrin, boards framed with gilt fillet and gilt scrollwork, smooth spine decorated with gilt scrolls and fillet, gilt title, gilt edges.
(some wear and tear to binding at corners and spine ends and, for Volume I: a small epidermure to the first cover, top spine end rather weakened and split, endpapers and frontispiece detached, some freckling to the first quire, but a good copy).
Important first edition of this voyage to Persia and Armenia.
Illustrated with two fine black lithographed and hand-watercolored frontispieces depicting a Chabean sheik and a Chabean woman in their costumes, and a large fold-out map, Map of parts of Khuzistan and Persia.
Joachim Stocqueler (1801-1886), an English journalist of Portuguese origin established in India, where he edited several periodicals, undertook this journey in 1831 after finding himself heavily in debt. He left Bombay in a hurry aboard a small Arab boat bound for the Persian Gulf. The story opens in Muscat, from where the author sailed up the Persian Gulf to Basra, before crossing Persia and Armenia to Odessa.
Provenance: contemporary English ex-dono, Eton, July 1834, on a flyleaf.
Not cited by Atabey or Ghani.
