[Nasid tahani li-sa`adat al-kulli al-diyana Lwis al-tamin `a - Lot 185
[Nasid tahani li-sa`adat al-kulli al-diyana Lwis al-tamin `asar malik Faransa wa-Nawar] dit SABBAGH (Michel). Cantique de Félicitation à Sa Majesté Très-Chrétienne Louis le Désiré, Roi de France et de Navarre, composed in Arabic by Michel Sabbâgh and translated into French by Grangeret de Lagrange... Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1814. Small in-4, 23 pp. sewn, original blue dominoté paper cover (covers loose, slight foxing, small folds, but a good copy). Interesting early 19th-century Imprimerie Royale document in French and Arabic characters. Bilingual hymn for the return of the Bourbons to the throne of France, written in Arabic by Mihail ibn Niqula ibn Ibrahim al-Sabbag (1784-1816) - whose name was Frenchized to Sabbâgh - materializing an officialization of the continuity of Oriental Languages under the First Restoration after the Empire. From the Syrian Melkite community, which he left for Cairo after studying in Damascus, Sabbagh, probably Palestinian, served as an interpreter for the French during the campaign of the Armée d'Orient. He followed them when Desaix surrendered. In Paris, Silvestre de Sacy associated him with his work, and in 1807, he became a copyist at the Imperial Library, before setting up a service to translate Arabic texts into French. Opposite translation by Jean-Baptiste-André Grangeret de Lagrange (1790-1859), a student at the Ecole des Langues Orientales. RETURN OF THE LILIES. LOUIS XVIII. LANGUES O. Provenance: Jesuits of Jersey (old stamp on false title).
