[Attributed to CASSAS or WOOD]. FRENCH SCHOOL. - Lot 183
[Attributed to CASSAS or WOOD]. FRENCH SCHOOL. [Handwritten list of his views]. Set of 2 handwritten files, contemporary and later (mid-19th century). Small in folio, written in brown ink. One, sewn with a ribbon, of [10] ff of which 3 are blank; the other of [18] ff on ruled paper with printed checks. The document, dating from around 1800, appears to be a collation of an album of plates with numbering and titles, some lines left blank with later annotations in gray pencil when a view is missing. The second, later list appears to date from around the middle of the 19th century and is a retranscription of the earlier list. Louis-François Cassas (1756-1827) was a French draughtsman, painter, engraver and Orientalist born in 1756, whose antique views were among the most beautiful and sought-after of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Robert Wood (1717-1771), classical scholar and traveler, led several expeditions to the Levant in the 1740s, during which he produced the first large-scale architectural surveys of Palmyra and Baalbek. These views may come from Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phénicie, de la Palestine et de la Basse-Egypte, published in 1799, or from Ruins of Palmyra and Balbec, London, 1827. [Syria].
