ALGERIA. - Lot 129
ALGERIA. ROUARGUE frères or Adolphe (from or after). Médéah. 55. S.l.n.d. (ca 1840-1850). Early oil painting on canvas (46 x 57.5 cm), in period gilded frame (faded, frame damaged in some places). Large panoramic view of the city of Medeah or Medea, an ancient Roman fortress in Algeria, with picturesque theory in the middle of a Muslim cemetery in the foreground. This scene corresponds to one of the views, engraved on steel in black, illustrating Léon Galibert's Histoire de l'Algérie, vol. 2, published in 1843. Illustrated by the Rouargue brothers, our painting may well be the model. Adolphe and Émile Rouargue were French painters, draughtsmen and engravers of the first half of the 19th century. Adolphe was a pupil of David d'Angers and exhibited at the Salon from 1831 to 1870. Old title label with number on edge of frame. Framed, traces of restoration top left. Almost faded but good condition.
