Ernest Godard (1827-1862), former intern at Paris hospitals, became famous for his research into hermaphroditism and his scientific travels in Egypt. His Atlas shows male and female figures suffering from impressive diseases (Aleppo pimples, leprosy, elephantiasis), includes a section on the anatomy of eunuchs and genital plates (circumcision, infibulation) and on hashish. He died young, in Jaffa, of peritonitis, and it fell to his friend and executor Charles Robin to collect and publish his handwritten notes.
