BLAEU, Johannes. - Lot 89
BLAEU, Johannes. КРЕМЛЕНА ГРАД. Kremlenagrad, Castellum urbis Moskvae. [Moscow]. (Amsterdam, 1662). Sheet (54 x 63 cm). Copper-engraved plan (38 x 49 cm), in black (small lack at lower left corner, light soiling, wetness and small marginal tears, split at central fold). Adorned with two decorative cartouches bearing the title and privilege. Rare plan of the Kremlin by Blaeu, published in his Atlas Maior, after a first state drawn confidentially around 1613-1614 by Hessel Gerritsz, whose plate was later damaged by fire in 1672. Bilingual text in Cyrillic and Latin on the title, the four cardinal points of the compass rose and the rivers Moskova and Neglinnaya, an unusual practice in Dutch cartography, give this map a singular character. Dedication text in upper right-hand corner.
