SCHRANZ, Joseph. - Lot 80
SCHRANZ, Joseph.
General view of the Bosphorus from Constantinople to Roumeli-Hissari, (taken from Asia).
Constantinople. J. Schranz and A. Percheron, (ca 1855-1860).
Large lithograph printed in black, enhanced in color and gum, printed on 5 sheets of strong paper (ca. 31 x 33 cm each) joined together, making a roll of 32 x 174 cm (very slight soiling and wear from use).
A fine watercolor copy.
Large, finely drawn and highly detailed panoramic view with place names in the lower margin. Done from life and lithographed, with Sabatier, by the artist Joseph Schranz. He published two different panoramas of Constantinople, in collaboration with A. Percheron, which under the same title presented 2 different views of the Bosphorus and Constantinople. This copy is the one that starts with a view of Bayler bey's Palace, on the left.
"The city is depicted with great precision, with numerous churches and mosques standing out on the horizon. In the margins are several monuments such as the Scutarii, the Roumelli Hissari, the Sultan Ahmet and the Galata Tower. In the foreground, we see detailed scenes of the daily life of the city's inhabitants. The Bosphorus Strait is depicted, with heavy maritime traffic".
One of the editions printed in Paris by Jacomme, rue de St. Quentin, others by rue Meslay.
Istanbul. Crimean War.
