30th GRAND PRIX DE L'AUTOMOBILE CLUB DE FRANCE Extremely rare lithographed poster of the 1936 A.C.F. Grand-Prix. Category Sports Cars - June 28, 1936 - Linas-Montlhéry Signed E. LANCASTER - AT. CARLU and dated 36 top left Imprimerie Courbet - 98, Rue de Charonne, Paris. 160 x 120cm. Mounted on canvas. (very good condition, despite old traces of folding). Notes : The Grand Prix automobile de l'ACF 1936 was a Grand Prix held at the Linas-Montlhéry Autodrome on June 28, 1936. As in 1937, it had the particularity of being run in sports cars, a category better suited to French manufacturers, particularly at the expense of German ones. In the end, Jean-Pierre Wimille and Raymond Sommer won the race on Bugatti Type 57Gs. Jean CARLU (1900 - 1997) & Éric LANCASTER (1911 - ?) Born in 1900 into a family of architects, Jean Carlu, known as CARLU, trained at the Beaux-Arts before turning to poster design. Initially inspired by the works of Capiello, he made his mark in the 1920s by developing a modern approach based on the "graphic expression of ideas", influenced by Cubism. A major figure in poster advertising alongside Cassandre and Loupot, he innovated with photomontage and joined the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) in 1930. President of the Alliance Graphique International, Savignac, Villemot and Lancaster all benefited from his teachings. Born in 1911, Éric Lancaster was a highly talented graphic designer working under the direction of Jean Carlu. His creations played an essential role in shaping the visual identity of French tourism in the mid-twentieth century, notably for Air France. This poster is unique in that it is signed by both Carlu and Lancaster; a work of Lancaster's youth, just like Savignac's 1937 poster for the following year's GP de l'ACF, also one of Carlu's pupils!
