ALFRED DUNHILL, Years 1920-1930 - Lot 54
ALFRED DUNHILL, Years 1920-1930 Rectangular box - probably snuffbox - in silver 800‰, the lid adorned with a burgundy lacquer plaque with extreme oriental decoration depicting a coastal landscape with animated decoration of a boat, the frame enhanced with black lacquer in geometric rings and solids, the geometric feet with stylized scrolls. Fitted with a hinge, it opens onto a vermeil interior. Signed "ALFRED DUNHILL PARIS STERLING". French work, diamond-shaped Workshop hallmark. Dimensions: 3.5x8.5x7.6cm. P. Gross: 206.8 g. (Lifts and chips). This box is a typical example of the influence of China and Japan on French jewelry production during the Art Deco period. The term "laque burgauté" or "lac burgauté" refers to mother-of-pearl-inlaid lacquer in shades of pink, violet, blue and green, which can be complemented by gold and silver leaf inlays to achieve enhanced contrasting effects. This technique was particularly used on display objects, sets, watches and clocks by the great Maisons of Place Vendôme during the 1920s. Lac burgauté" plates were most often manufactured in Japan, then incorporated into Western decorative objects. During the exhibition "Objets Précieux Art Déco de la collection du Prince et de la Princesse Sadruddin Aga Khan", organized in 2018 in Paris by the Ecole des Arts Joailliers, a box from the Maison Cartier and a set from the Maison Janesich were presented, demonstrating the use of lac burgauté plates.
