TAMBULOV, Aleksander. Portrait of Sergei Paradjanov in front - Lot 100
TAMBULOV, Aleksander. Portrait of Sergei Paradjanov in front of his house, n.d. (before 1985) Color photograph dedicated on verso in Russian in pen: "Serguey Paradjanov à Bernard". The dedication is accompanied by his self-portrait, crossed out with three lines symbolizing his three imprisonments. The sketched portrait is surmounted by a palette threatened by censorship scissors. (Folds in one corner). 30 x 40 cm Sergei Paradjanov (1924-1990) was an Armenian film director born in Tbilisi, Soviet Georgia. He is best known for his film "Horses of Fire", shot in Ukraine in 1964. Controversial in the Soviet Union, and imprisoned several times, he was much defended and appreciated by Western cinephiles. A fascinating and provocative figure, he exerted a great artistic influence on a whole generation of filmmakers in Georgia, Ukraine and Armenia (Gareguine Zakoïan in: Jean Radvanyi (ed.), Le Cinéma arménien, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, 1993, p. 157). A museum is dedicated to him in Yerevan, Armenia, where he is considered the great national filmmaker. Provenance: Sergueï Paradjanov (1924-1990); offered in October 1985
