Recueil des Historiens de Croisades, published by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Documents arméniens, two volumes, Paris, Imprimerie impériale, 1869-1906 2 large folio volumes (44 x 30 cm), bilingual text in French and Armenian: [2] ff, CXXIV-855 pp. + [2] ff, CCLXIV-1038 pp. Bound in contemporary havana half-chagrin, five-ribbed spine, gilt titles, monogrammed "F.M. 1869" and "F.M. 1906", corners and spines reinforced with green vellum (traces of wear on binding, small marginal defects on qq. pages of t. I with uniformly browned leaves). This two-volume work is part of an important collection of seventeen volumes published by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres from 1841 to 1906, containing medieval documents written during the Crusades, in Old French, Latin, Greek, Arabic and Armenian. The two present volumes include chronicles by Matthew of Edessa, Gregory the Priest, Kirakos of Gandzak, Samuel of Ani, Smbat the Constable, Michael the Syrian, Saint Nerses of Lampron, Hayton (La Flor des Estoires des Parties d'Orient), etc... The first volume includes three color plates of helioplastic reproductions. This volume is enriched by a letter on the letterhead of the Institut de France, Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, dated March 20, 1909, addressed to Frédéric Macler, making available the two volumes of Historiens arméniens des Croisades, with Mrs. Frédéric Macler's card indicating that she sold Mrs. [...?] the two volumes on March 12, 1940. Handwritten notes by Frédéric Macler included opposite title page. Provenance: Frédéric Macler (1869-1938), Paris; Librairie H. Samuelian, 51 rue Monsieur-le-Prince, Paris; Acquired 2003. Frédéric Macler (1869-1938) was one of France's leading Armenologists, co-founder in 1919 of the Société des études arméniennes and founder in 1920 of the Revue des études arméniennes.
