Meissen - Lot 107
Meissen Porcelain covered flask from the toilet service of Glückberg Castle, baluster-shaped, with polychrome decoration of animated harbor scenes and reserves on a gold background adorned with flowers and interlacing, the handle of the lid in the shape of flowers and foliage. Marked: crossed swords in gold. 18th century, circa 1740-1745 H. 13 cm. Restoration to the lid grip. Provenance: This flask is part of a toilet set of which fourteen items are kept at Glücksberg Castle in Schleswig-Holstein. The date on which they joined the Glücksberg collection is unknown, as is the original recipient of this toilet. The service may have been supplied to the Grand Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksberg, but it is also possible that it belonged to the kings of Denmark. Glücksberg Castle was owned by the Danish crown until 1871, when it was transferred to the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein following the German-Danish war. The Duke brought with him furniture from Ballenstedt Castle, and it is possible that the toilet service was transferred to the castle with this collection. For a full analysis of this service, see H. Jedding, "Eine Meissener Toilette-Garnitur in Schloss Glücksburg", Keramos 130, October 1990, pp. 3-16.
