Rolex, renowned for its wrist chronographs, wanted to offer their first automatic-caliber chronograph in the late '80s. Despite a wide variety of automatic calibers, they didn't have the technical know-how to build a manufacture movement. So they turned to Zenith, which had been offering an automatic chronograph caliber for over 10 years: the El Primero. Rolex used it as the basis for the 4030 caliber, reducing the frequency and removing the date function. It was not until the introduction of reference 116520 that the first Rolex Manufacture chronograph caliber was introduced. Today, Daytonas equipped with the 4030 movement (nicknamed "Daytona Zenith") are sought after by collectors for their rarity. The watch was revised in November 2025.
