Alex LIZAL (1878 1929) - Lot 15
Alex LIZAL (1878 1929) Village of Cape Breton Oil on canvas 41 x 32 cm Signed lower left Located and dated 1902 lower right Provenance: Private collection This rare, luminous painting by Landes painter Alex Lizal, dated 1902, depicts the village of Capbreton bathed in soft morning light. The foreground is occupied by a large, bare tree that structures the composition and guides the eye towards the orange-roofed houses typical of the Gascon coastline. The brushstrokes are fine and supple, and the harmonious colors oscillate between ochres, greens and faded blues, aptly capturing the peaceful atmosphere of a South-Western village at the beginning of the 20th century. This painting illustrates Alex Lizal's taste for plein-air painting and his ability to capture the specific light of the Landes region.
