Paul SIGNAC (1863-1935) The Pont-Neuf, Paris Watercolor and pencil line Signature stamp lower left. 27 x 42 cm Provenance: Rodrigues-Henriques Collection Rodrigues-Henriques Collection A perpetual nomad in search of motifs, watercolor became Signac's main mode of 1910 / 1935 his main mode of expression. He had a studio on rue de l'Abbaye, near the Seine. The river and its repeated motifs that enabled him to capture meteorology, light, sky the sky, the reflections of the water and the colors of the river. In Pont-Neuf, Signac contrasts the liquid element, the clouds, with the massive structures of the bridge and quays. The winter trees, without foliage, rise up and balance the bridge's horizontal emphasis. In 1911, Signac presented a series of canvases and watercolors at the Galerie Druet in an exhibition entitled Ponts de Paris. Guillaume Apollinaire, who wrote about them, echoing his own poetry. With its free, varied brushstrokes, colorful shimmer and decorative breadth our watercolors, like others, become the medium of a new lyricism. "Le Pont Neuf" belonged to the painter Félix Vallotton.
