CARTIER Paris, 1930s - Lot 51
CARTIER Paris, 1930s Important 950‰ platinum lapel clip brooch of rectangular shape entirely paved with old and half-cut diamonds, its center adorned with a stepped projecting scroll motif finished in a point and highlighted with a row of falling square-cut diamonds, enhanced with baguette-cut diamonds mounted in rail and closed settings. Pins in 950‰ platinum with defective safety clip. Signed "Cartier Paris" and numbered. French work. Dimensions: 3.5x5.7cm. P. Gross: 27.6g. With red morocco case gilded with the Maison's signature small irons. Spectacular for its three-dimensional volume and large size, this brooch is a magnificent illustration of Maison Cartier's white jewelry of the 1930s. Adapting to the feminine fashions of the period, brooches-pinces are emblematic objects of the Maison. Adorning hats or garments, they could be worn on the front of dresses to adjust their drape, or on the back to emphasize deep necklines. The combination of pave and baguette-cut diamonds is also noteworthy, and was very popular in the 1930s. Bibliography: RUDOE Judy, Cartier 1900-1939, Paris, Somogy, 1997, p. 22, 258 et seq.
