SANZ (Manuel).
In-8, [19] ff, 265 pp, [3] ff (the last 3 preliminary ff. are bound between p. 8 and 9).
Later havana morocco, 5-rib spine, gilt title and author, ornate caissons, double gilt fillet framing the boards, roulette a la chasse, moiré silk endpapers, speckled edges, in marbled slipcase (slight soiling to boards, very discreet foxing).
A highly polemical Spanish treatise written in the form of a dialogue, aimed at refuting Islam and converting Muslims, particularly those then present in Malta.
It sets out to denounce Mohammed and the Koran, then to defend the divinity of Christ, while going on to violently criticize Judaism.
The work is said to be a translation of a 1691 Italian text by Paolo Bisagni in Catania.
Manuel Sanz (1646-1719) was a professor of grammar, rector of the Collège de Malte and adviser to the Holy Office [of the Inquisition] "Fr. Sanz is undoubtedly the author of this translation" (Backer-Sommervogel, 7, 619). Palau, 301223.
A fine copy.
