[Calligraphy]. ARMENIA. [BALDJIAN (Alexandre)]. Armenische V - Lot 273
[Calligraphy]. ARMENIA. [BALDJIAN (Alexandre)]. Armenische Vorschriften und Kalligraphien. I., II. et III Heft. Wien, Impr. A. Leykum, [1837-1838]. Small oblong folio (25 x 37 cm.). 1 ff., 25 plates. Contemporary fawn half-basane, smooth spine, top cover on yellow paper preserved (spine very rubbed, very moderate russeting). Very rare suite of 25 beautiful lithographed plates in black. Collection of Armenian calligraphy models compiled by Father Baldjian, a priest from the Congregation of the Mechitarist Fathers of Vienna. The preserved cover bears the title in Armenian and the date 1837; it is preceded by a handwritten title in French added at the time of binding: "Calligraphie arménienne des Méquitaristes, à Vienne, 1837". Only one copy is known to exist in the Worldcat, preserved at the BnF, and no detailed collation has been found. Our copy, perhaps incomplete, is composed as follows: [1] f. (title of 1st issue), 18 plates (2 without no., plate no. 1, one without no., plates nos. 3 to 7, plates nos. 1 to 8, another plate no. 8), [1] f. (title of 3rd issue), 7 plates (nos. 1-5 and 2 without no.). Provenance: Ecole Sainte-Geneviève and Jesuits of Jersey (stamps).
