[Armenia] Պապէսեան, (Յովհաննէս) [BABESSIAN (Hovhannes)]. Հայաստան. Համայնագիտական Հայաստան 1931 [Arménie. Encyclopédie de l'Arménie 1931]. Paris, Imp. Dufrénoy, 1933. 1 color printed map (76.6 x 82.5 cm), (soiling, tiny cracks at folds). Large color printed map with illustrations, boxes and explanatory text. This rare map, produced by Hovannes K. Babessian in exile near Paris, depicts Soviet Armenia surrounded by historical notes, auxiliary maps, illustrations of wildlife, architectural heritage and geographical data. It bears witness to the desire to preserve Armenian identity in the diaspora after Ottoman persecution and integration into the USSR. Babessian is also the author of Achkharhakroutioun Hayasdan (Paris, 1933) and Atlas historique de l'Arménie (Los Angeles, 1954). Only two institutional copies are known to exist: University of Leiden and David Rumsey Map Collection (ID 13289.000).
