ARMENIA. WALDSEEMÜLLER (Martin). Tercia Asiae Tabula. - Lot 56
ARMENIA. WALDSEEMÜLLER (Martin). Tercia Asiae Tabula. Strasbourg, Johann Schott, 1513. Woodcut map (62.5 x 43 cm), period colors (marginal restorations). Superb Waldseemüller map in very rare period colors. The map shows the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, centered on Armenia. City names are written in Latin. A fine copy of one of the earliest known maps of the Armenian region. The 1513 edition of Ptolemy's "Geographiae", printed in Strasbourg, is considered the first modern atlas, with 27 antique maps and 20 new maps by Waldseemüller. The fruit of the work of the Gymnasium Vosagense (16th century) around René II of Lorraine, it incorporates recent discoveries, including the mention of the name "America". This edition marks a major transition between ancient geography and Renaissance humanist geography.
