OTTOMAN EMPIRE. - Lot 31
OTTOMAN EMPIRE. MOLL (Herman). The Turkish Empire in Europe, Asia, and Africa divided into all its governments ... London, 1715 - [c. 1730]. Rare and impressive copper-engraved map in black (62.5 x 103.3 cm, including margins), colored borders (map restored). Large map of the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century, published in London by the famous geographer Herman Moll, based on Guillaume de Delisle's 1714 map. Moll first published his English map based on Delisle's map in 1715. It appears in his atlas The World Described, a remarkable early eighteenth-century atlas. It covers a vast territory from Spain and Germany to Egypt, Persia and the Arabian Gulf, accurately illustrating the borders of the Ottoman Empire at its height. The map is distinguished by its engraved vignettes illustrating views of Constantinople, Smyrna and four superb scenes of Jerusalem, including a panoramic view after Cornelis de Bruijn and depictions of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Dedicated to Thomas Vernon, English MP and influential member of the Turkey Company, in a cartouche decorated with the Veron coat of arms.
