Historically, Armenians inhabited Marash for centuries, notably during the Kingdom of Cilicia and the Ottoman Empire, forming a prosperous community. They were forced to flee during the genocide of 1915, then definitively after the massacre of 1920, following the withdrawal of French troops. Marash officially became Turkish in 1921, following the Ankara Agreements between France and the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the period of publication of this book.
