CRAVEN (Elizabeth). Voyage en Crimée et à Constantinople, en - Lot 16
CRAVEN (Elizabeth). Voyage en Crimée et à Constantinople, en 1786, par Miladi Craven. Translated from the English by M. Guédon de Berchère, notary in London. Enriched with several maps and engravings. A Londres, et se trouve à Paris, chez Maradan, 1789. In-8. [3] ff. 443 p., [2] ff. (catalog), 7 black etchings. Slightly later fawn half-basane, smooth ornate spine, pink title-piece, speckled edges (flaws including blunted corners, small worm work at tail of spine, light stains on last 2 ff.). Edition of the famous "Voyage de Lady Craven", published the same year as the English original. Our Maradan edition is considered the true French original, as it is the only one mentioned in the Journal des savants of June-July 1789. The London address on the title page is fictitious, a consequence of the Anglomania characteristic of the book trade at the time. Illustrated with 7 black folding plates, including a map of the Crimea. Elisabeth Berkeley, known as Lady Craven (1750-1828), who became Craven and then Margravine Morganatique of Ansbach-Bayreuth, was an English woman of letters and an avid traveler.
