AMAZIGHS. MAGHREB. EASTERN ARMY. 1830 CHARTER BINDING. VENTU - Lot 244
AMAZIGHS. MAGHREB. EASTERN ARMY. 1830 CHARTER BINDING. VENTURE DE PARADIS (Jean-Michel). Former professor of Turkish (sic). Grammaire et Dictionnaire abrégés de la langue Berbère. Revised by Amédée Jaubert. Followed by : Itinéraires de l'Afrique septentrionale. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1844. In-4, [4] ff. (2 titles, 2 faux-titres), XXIII-236 pp. (continuous pagination), long-grained red morocco, spine with 4 nerves, gilt title and tomaison, ornate caissons, gilt framing to boards, gilt Charter of 1830 irons stamped on boards, gilt fillets and irons on endpapers, moiré silk (ivory tabis) lining to endpapers, gilt edges. Lexicon in French, transcribed Berber, figurative Berber and Arabic. The second part develops the itineraries of Venture de Paradis (1739-1799), a diplomat and adventurer who was, among other things, Bonaparte's translator into Arabic, with extensive information on populations and trade in North Africa in the late 18th century. In a magnificent and rare binding from Louis-Philippe's library. With the 1830 Charter coat of arms stamped in the center of the boards. Following the revolutionary episode of 1830, the shield of Orleans was replaced for a time by the Constitutional Charter, the State then being a representation of the tables of the Law engraved with the "Constitutional Charter of 1830", framed by the regalia (royal crown, scepter and hand of justice), the Legion of Honor and flags (O.H.R. 2499 n°10). First part of the seventh volume of Recueil de voyages et de mémoires, published by the Société de Géographie, with title page addressed to Arthus Bertrand, 1844. Slight rubbing to corners, upper spine slightly worn, but a fine copy.
