AGRICULTURE. ZOOTECHNIE. OLD PHOTOGRAPHY. BODMER. VACHER (Ma - Lot 243
AGRICULTURE. ZOOTECHNIE. OLD PHOTOGRAPHY. BODMER. VACHER (Marcel); MALLÈVRE (Alfred). Les Races bovines en France. [Paris], Ch. Bodmer, [1900]. Broadside, [2] f. (title, foreword), [19] leaves of text, 38 plates of photographs mounted on cardboard, leaves in publisher's flap wallet, cold-stamped title on front cover. A very rare album, published for the Exposition Universelle de Paris 1900. Only 2 copies in French libraries (veterinary school libraries). Describes 19 breeds of cattle raised in France, each described on a page of text and represented on 2 plates of black albumen prints by Karl-Henry Bodmer (or Charles, 1854-1934), son of Swiss painter and photographer Karl Bodmer. Each large-format photograph (ca. 21 x 38 cm), laminated on heavy paper, is captioned and signed within the image. The photographs are of the highest quality, each one showing a bull and a cow from 3 different angles. Charles Bodmer, born near Barbizon, which influenced his father, led a career as an agricultural photographer; his many photographs were used in general agricultural competitions from 1884 onwards, for which he was awarded the Médaille du Mérite Agricole. Faded slipcase (spine renewed), text leaves worn in margins, photos a little faded. Enriched copy with an interesting text, 8 pp. in-4, paperback: GREA (Emmanuel), Note sur les résultats présentés par l'Album des races bovines françaises de MM. Marcel Vacher et Mallèvre. April 1901. Very rare.
