Paris, Jules Meynial, [1927]. In-folio. [16] ff. text with figures, 50 captioned plates in leaves, in repainted black silk folder, all in publisher's original full filali de Marrakech (goat) flap folder, cold-titled on upper cover. Famous collection of 50 color plates based on compositions by Russian-born painter Alexandre Iacovleff (1887-1938), during the Croisière noire organized by André Citroën in Africa from October 1924 to June 1925. The text is also illustrated with black sketches by the painter. The official artist of the Croisières Citroën, Iacovleff was commissioned by the Beaux-Arts to "use his brush to capture the vanishing customs and habits of the indigenous people". He produced some very fine, expressive portraits in red chalk, sepia and pencil. On his return, Lucien Vogel published this luxurious album in 1927. Carteret, Illustrés, IV, p. 213; Monod, 6237. Top board a little rubbed; folder faded with stains, scratches and laces cut, tears repaired with adhesive, pl. 13, and 50 with small stain in margin, a few plates a little oxidized with stains in margin.
