ANATOMY ALBUM. CLOQUET (Jules). Anatomie de l'homme, ou Desc - Lot 166
ANATOMY ALBUM. CLOQUET (Jules). Anatomie de l'homme, ou Description et figures lithographiées de toutes les parties du corps humain. Paris, C. de Lasteyrie, 1821-1831. 5 large folio volumes. Later imitation binding in marbled fawn half-basin with corners, spine with 4 nerves, red title page and tomaison, decorated caissons. First edition of the very first lithographically illustrated anatomical atlas. Magnificent folio of 300 black lithographed plates, published between 1821 and 1831 by Charles de Lasteyrie and Godefroy Engelmann in 51 issues over 10 years. These plates came off the presses of the very first Parisian lithography workshops, created just after the Empire by the two authors. A rare and impressive work. Five volumes in continuous pagination: Volume I. Osteology. [1] f., 2-158 p., 56 plates - Volume II. Myology. [1] f., p. 159-322, pl. 57-116 - Volume III. Neurology. p. 323-504 , pl. 117-186 - Volume IV. Angiology. [1] f., p. 505-656, pl. 187-258 - Volume V. Splanchnology and Embryotomy. [1] f., p. 657-775, pl. 259-300. Jules-Germain Cloquet (1790-1883) was Professor of Clinical Surgery and Surgical Pathology at the Paris Faculty of Medicine, and drew his art from anatomical plates, having begun as a modeler of anatomical waxes after his studies at the Rouen Medical School, then as an anatomical assistant for dissections at the end of the Empire, before becoming a surgeon at Hôpital Saint-Louis. Slight rubbing to binding, title page of t.1 reproduced in facsimile, foxing, side margins of some pl. short, pl. 136-138, 142, 237, 250, 252-253, and 287 uniformly browned, but overall a good copy.
