Beautiful typographical motto mark on the colophon. A precious copy, entirely colored at the time and preserved in its original binding. The preface is by Joachimus Camerarius, a famous 16th-century translator and teacher of classical languages. One of the most famous and complete herbaria of its time, this is the third Frankfurt edition. With over 1,000 woodcuts in the text. The woodcuts are mainly based on drawings by Conrad Gesner, a 16th-century Swiss naturalist. "Seven text woodcuts deal with distillation and furnaces" (Isphording, Herbs 82). Provenances: Numerous early indications of belonging to collections. Among them, a label from the Hagströmer library of the Swedish Läkaresällskapet society of the Karolinska Institute indicating that this volume was duplicated and removed from the Swedish library - 15th-century ex libris in pen dated 1540 opposite the title. Octagonal MD ex libris on leather with book and foxing - Hot-stamped HD monogram. Early annotations in cut pen Nissen, BBI 1311. Missing laces, wetness, browned leaves, quires appear slightly dislocated, probably rebound, slight oxidation of paper.
