16th century POETRY. TYPOGRAPHIC ART. CORSICA. TASSO (Torqua - Lot 115
16th century POETRY. TYPOGRAPHIC ART. CORSICA. TASSO (Torquato). Aminta, favola boschereccia, ora per la prima volta alla sua vera lezione ridotta. Crisopoli, Impresso Co' Caratteri Bodoniani, 1789. (Parma, G.B.Bodoni, 1789). In-4, [6] ff, 142 pp, contemporary gold-flecked fawn calf, smooth spine richly decorated in the taste of the period, green basane title-piece, gilt title, double gilt garland with floral roulette framing the boards, gilt roulettes on the endpapers, gilt edges, endpapers of vat paper Beautiful Bodonian edition in a splendid contemporary binding. First edition on fine laid paper with wide margins, of this bucolic fable by Tasso. This 1789 edition is "one of Bodoni's finest" (Brunet, V, 673). A very fine copy in a very pure binding, carefully executed, with wide boards to reveal the neo-antiquist gilded garland. The binding is signed (gilt lettering at foot of spine), but too many letters have been discreetly erased by use or age to identify the mark. Adorned with a medallion portrait of Le Tasse, engraved in intaglio on the title. A fine dedication page engraved by Bodoni before the title in printed cursive to "Signora Marchesa Donna Anna Malaspina della Bastia Dama Dell'insigne ordine della Crociera", who is Annetta Malaspina della Bastia (1727-1797), a Corsican family of Italian origin. Joints, headpieces and corners very slightly rubbed, slight discoloration at head of lower board.
