GARDEN DESIGN. HORTICULTURE. GROEN (Jan vander). Den Nederlandtsen hovenier, zijnde het I deel van het Vermakelijck landt-leven... [followed by]. [P. Nyland:] Den Verstandigen Hovenier. [And] Twee hondert modellen, voor de lief-hebbers van hoven en Thuynen. Brussels: Peeter Vleugaert, 1687. 3 parts in one volume in-8, [13] ff, 48-[2] pp; [4] ff, 109-[3] pp; [28] ff. including title and 25 ff. of figures numbered from 45 to 98. Contemporary muted half vellum with corners, marbled boards. Famous Dutch treatise on the art of gardening, first published in Amsterdam in 1669, richly decorated with numerous black woodcuts. Vander Groen was gardener to Prince William III of Orange from 1659. In this work, he relates architecture to garden ornamentation, explains many plants and notes on sundials, etc. The first two parts are illustrated with 19 full-page figures (views of buildings with their gardens, fountains, models of flowerbeds) and a few engravings of instruments in the text. Some copies include supplements on beekeeping and veterinary medicine. Here we find everything concerning gardens in the strict sense of the word. The third part, complete in this way, is decorated with over 40 full-page compositions: numerous models of flowerbeds and arbors, sundials, etc. Upper edge split on vellum. Light angular stain, restoration, with angular loss, on page 55 of the third part.
