EDITORIAL CORRESPONDENCE. ILLUSTRATION. Louis JOU. Les Baux, - Lot 17
EDITORIAL CORRESPONDENCE. ILLUSTRATION. Louis JOU. Les Baux, May 28, 1923 to July 22, 1923.3 L.A.S. to Mr. and Mrs. Coq. 3 pp. in-4 (21.6 x 27 cm and 21.6 x 27, 7 cm). Letterhead with his initials and motto. Interesting correspondence to publisher André Coq and his wife, in which Jou discusses the creation of Anatole France's Abeille (1923), which he illustrates. On May 28, Louis Jou calls André Coq "[...] I have no news of Abeille? [...] Do you have any leaves? And the word of honor? Can you give me any details?"; on July 2, this time he addresses Mrs. Coq, expressing his dismay and anger: "You speak only of my faults, without Mr. Coq's faults being in question [...] when I told you that you would have the drawings, for me, it was a certainty that you would have them. But when Mr. Coq promised to send me a sum of money here in Les Baux, and I haven't received anything, was it as certain? You know, Madame, that I'm not rich, and that if I work it's simply because I need what I earn from my work [...]" he then mentions a book he was supposed to be working on, and the accumulated delays (the book and the drawings). He insists at length on payment for his work; finally, on July 22, 1923, a drawing of the work Abeille is missing, and he indicates in a reproachful tone "They have traveled a long way from my home, your home, your home, my home. One is missing... possibly. If I'd had Abeille's copy, this might not have happened, but so soon [...]" so he's going to make or redo the drawing he doesn't think is in his proofs, then he talks about the cover, the number of woods he'll need, his expenses, the additional drawings....".
