XVIIIth THEATRE. BUIRETTE DE BELLOY (Pierre-Laurent) dit Dor - Lot 12
XVIIIth THEATRE. BUIRETTE DE BELLOY (Pierre-Laurent) dit Dormont de Belloy [The Siege of Calais]. Autograph letter signed. L.A.S. (s.l.n.d. [Calais, after 1765]). 1 pp. in-4 (18.5 x 22.5 cm). Address, red wax seal preserved. Paper missing above address, missing paper caught in seal. A playwright, Buirette de Belloy discusses his great success, Le Siège de Calais, a patriotic tragedy first presented at the Comédie-Française in February 1765, written just after France was forced to cede part of its colonial empire to England under the Treaty of Paris in 1763. He thanks the President [Guillaume] Pigault de l'Epinoy for sending him "[...] the Gazette Anglaise; and I will consider as a true gift the copy you offer me of the translation of the Translation of my Tragedy [...] they are tokens of the friendship of my new fellow citizens [...]". Adds under his signature "citoyen de Calais".
