Charles Rollin (1671-1741) was a French historian, educator and man of letters, best known for his role in educational reform at the turn of the XVIIᵉ and XVIIIᵉ centuries. Professor of rhetoric at the Collège de France, then principal of the Collège de Beauvais, he was deeply influenced by Jansenism, militating for an education based on Christian morality, pedagogical clarity and the study of modern languages and history. A didactic work, his Histoire ancienne, published between 1730 and 1738, is his major work.
