[Manuscrit]. [Collection of several manuscripts on various s - Lot 251
[Manuscrit]. [Collection of several manuscripts on various subjects: Medicine - Religion - History]. [s.l.], [ca 1672-1676 and XIXth]. 1 vol. small in-4 (approx. 20x14 cm.), 198 f., contemporary Armenian binding in full tan basane, smooth spine, boards decorated with fillet and cold flowers, cloth-lined spine flaps, double headband (epidermal wear to boards and spine, clasps missing, upper hinge split, part of spine detached, headbands, edges and corners rubbed, quires out of order, some partly unbound, soiling and wetness, upper margin of some short pages slightly reaching the text).
Interesting composite manuscript bringing together several texts of varying nature, copied by different hands and from diverse sources, mostly from the XVIIIᵉ century. Most of the texts date back to the 1670s, with the exception of the last eleven leaves, which date back to the XIXᵉ century.
The set covers diverse themes including medicine, religion, and history, and reflects prolonged use through the centuries. The names of the copyists are not mentioned; only two explicit dates appear in the manuscript: on folio 82, we read:
"Յինէն ընծայ այս քեզ եղբայր. մերոյ նախնեացս վեպ և ճառ մարտիրոսէս յոգաթշուառ շրջաբերեալ թիւսէ ծիծառ (1672) "(May this book by our ancestors - narrative and homily on the martyrs - be offered to you, brother, in the sorrow of the soul, the year 1672) ;
and on folio 189, a second date is given:
"թուին ՌՃԻԷ (1676) և ամսեանն սեպտեմբերի բ." (in the year 1676, September 2).
The last 11 leaves, written in the XIXᵉ century, include part of the text written in Ottoman Turkish transcribed in Armenian letters, testifying to the multilingual context and the volume's continuous transmission through time.
The manuscript is embellished with illustrated lettering and marginalia. Important passages are copied in red or orange ink. The main layout is two-column, but several isolated leaves feature a single-column text, suggesting additions or adaptations.
Provenance:
A handwritten note on the first page (and repeated later in the volume) reads: "Յիշատակէ գիրքս այս յօվսեփ վարդապետին, որ ետ յիշատակէ ար Ընջղեցի Փիլիպոսի, որիդի Տեառն Յարութեանն, ՌՄԸ թուոյն, մայիսի ի-ին"
(Souvenir of this book to vardapet Hovsep, given in memory of Pilippos of Injugh [Djougha], on the Lord's Resurrection Day, in the year 1741, May 10).
A second, undated inscription by an unknown scribe states:
"Օգնեա հոգիք, սուրբ Աստուած, զսկսելոյ իմ դուհան ի զարդ"
(Help my soul, O Holy God, to begin my work in beauty).
A monogram cachet dating from 1710, (letters unidentified).
A second cachet, bearing the monogram:
"Քրիստոսի ծառա Հովսեփ ՌՄԲ"
(Servant of Christ, Hovsep, year 1793).
A third cachet, partially erased, bears the inscription:
"Քրիստոսի ծառա ... 1871 or 1861",
indicating ownership in the second half of the XIXᵉ century, (name illegible).
