This book is one of the major historical works by Raffi, a famous Armenian writer of the XIXᵉ century, known for his patriotic novels and historical research. Les Mélikats du Khamsa traces the history of the semi-independent Armenian principalities located in the Khamsa region of Nagorno-Karabakh, describing their political organization, struggles and role in Armenian national resistance to invaders. The second, revised and expanded edition was published after the author's death by his widow Anna, paying tribute to his intellectual legacy and commitment to Armenian history.
