[Instructional treatise on navigation, divided into several sections]. Venice, Imprimerie Sainte-Lazare, 1809. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-4, 286 p., pl.; 184 p., paperback (corners dulled, quires untidy, soiling and stains in margins). Rare nautical treatise in Armenian by Ghukas Oghloughian, Armenian author of the XIXᵉ century. The work, structured in several chapters, deals with the principles of navigation, including chart reading, maritime orientation, ship maneuvering techniques as well as notions of physics applied to the sea. The book features a full-page illustration engraved on copperplate by Zucchi, as well as 17 plates outside the text, including 2 maps and 15 numbered fold-out plates. The first map serves as a legend for chart interpretation, while the second represents a portion of the Atlantic coast, including Africa, Portugal, Spain and France. The 15 fold-out plates contain explanations and geometric figures designed to facilitate navigation, distance calculation and the reading of nautical charts, celestial maps, etc. A remarkable work demonstrating the adaptation of modern scientific knowledge to the Armenian language. Provenance: Ex Libris Mario e Fiammetta Witt (on back cover). Mario Witt built up one of the most famous libraries of maritime literature. His wife Fiamette Witt (née Olschki) was the granddaughter of Leo S. Olschki, founder in 1886 in Florence (Italy) of the prestigious publishing house of the same name.
