Lyon, Jean Thioly, 1671. In-12, [28]-481-[17] p., later half-brown calf, smooth spine, brown title-piece, untrimmed (boards rubbed, epidermis on spine, tail cap worn, slight foxing). First edition This posthumous work by Father Gabriel de Chinon (1610-1668) is not a simple travelogue, but a true missionary treatise. It describes in detail the religion, government and customs of the Zoroastrians, Shiite Persians and Armenians, with an in-depth analysis of the Armenian community in Djulfa, deported by Shah Abbas I. Father Gabriel de Chinon (1610-1668), a Capuchin missionary sent to Persia and Armenia around 1640, stayed in the Safavid Empire until his death. His travels included Mosul, Djoulfa, Isfahan, Tiflis and Yerevan.
