[Manuscript]. Երեմիա Մեղրեցի [EREMIA DE MEGHRI] . Բառգիրք Հա - Lot 97
[Manuscript]. Երեմիա Մեղրեցի [EREMIA DE MEGHRI] . Բառգիրք Հայոց [Armenian Dictionary]. [S.l., ca. 17th-18th c.]. In-4 (21.5 x 15 cm.), 74 f., later marbled boards (boards damaged, soiling and wetness, worm work, qq. pages missing at beginning of work). Handwritten copy of Meghri's Eremia Armenian dictionary. The Բառգիրք Հայոց is the first published Armenian dictionary compiled by the scholar Eremia de Meghri, a seminal figure of the XVIIᵉ century. The first edition of this fundamental work was published in 1698 in Livorno by Sarkis Sahetdjian of Eudocie, making it a pioneering work in the history of Armenian lexicography. The dictionary presents entries in classical Armenian (grabar) accompanied by explanations, sometimes with equivalents in other languages, and was intended to preserve and transmit the Armenian language in a multilingual context. Used in educational and religious circles, it remains an essential source for the historical and philological study of Armenian. Provenance: Frédéric Macler (label on back cover). Frédéric Macler (1869-1938) was a specialist in oriental languages, holding the chair of Armenian at the Langues Orientales from 1911 to 1937. Co-founder of the Société des études arméniennes (1919) and the Revue des études arméniennes (1920), he authored some 100 articles and several translations on Armenian language, culture and art.
