[Manuscript]. Շարակնոց [CHARAKNOTS]. 1606. In-12, (ca. 13x9.5 cm.), 348 f., contemporary Armenian flap binding in full tan calf, smooth spine, cold decoration on boards and flap, burgundy and cream floral cloth lining on flaps, 1 f. of an old manuscript used as upper flyleaf (head cap torn off, clasps missing, book disbound, quires out of order, a few flyleaves, soiling, occasional heavy worm gallery). A precious manuscript of the Charaknots, dating from 1606, remarkable for its fine calligraphy and rich, meticulous ornamentation. According to the colophon, this Charaknots, a book of sacred songs of the Armenian Church, was produced in 1606 at the expense of a certain Ղուկաս (Ghukas) and his family, testifying to a devoted family patronage. The manuscript is distinguished by its illuminations and marginal ornamentation, executed in the Armenian iconographic tradition of the period. Major artistic elements include a half-page miniature depicting the Resurrection of Christ, as well as two altar bands colored and enhanced with gold. It also includes several bands at the head of certain pages, as well as marginal ornaments combining floral, geometric and symbolic motifs, and human figures representing biblical characters. A rare and precious manuscript preserved in its original Armenian binding.
