Prince Maximilian traveled along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to the upper Missouri among the American Plains tribes in 1833-1834, reaching as far as Fort Mackenzie and the Blackfoot tribe of Montana. He collected botanical and natural history data, and the expedition resulted in an extremely productive study of the Plains and Rocky Mountain Indians, second only to the Lewis and Clark papers.
The illustration consists of 61 woodcut vignettes on unencumbered plates; a plan, and 1 large fold-out itinerary map with colored boundaries, hors-texte.
