[Americana]. JANSSON (Jan). Insulae Americanae in Oceano Sep - Lot 316
[Americana]. JANSSON (Jan). Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali cum Terris adiacentibus. Amstelodami, apud Ioannem Ianssonium, [ca. 1680]. 1 copper-engraved map, 46 x 55 cm on 50 x 60 cm sheet, hand-colored (left lateral margin slightly browned and very skillfully restored).
Rare first state of Jansson's highly decorative map of the Caribbean, based on Gerritsz's map and voyages.
The map extends from Virginia and Florida in the north to Panama, Cartagena and Venezuela in the south, encompassing the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean islands, including the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico...
Cartographically, the map is inspired by the extremely rare Hessel Gerritsz map, circa 1631, reflecting Gerritsz's first-hand knowledge of his voyage to South America and the West Indies undertaken in 1628. The main difference is the addition of the west coast of Central America. The nomenclature of the North American section is virtually identical to that of Gerritsz's map.
Richly decorated, the map contains two cartouches: a title cartouche illustrated by putti surrounded by animals (turtles, snakes, iguanas and bats) that Europeans at the time associated with this new region, and another cartouche containing the mile scale, held by two putti. Finally, three compass roses and five sailing ships scattered across the ocean.
The copperplate engraving of this map was originally produced by Jodocus Hondius II (1594?-1629). The first state was published in 1636 with the Jansson imprint, as Burden mentions. It appeared in several editions in his Atlas Novus in its Latin, French, German, Dutch and Spanish versions. This copy is a later edition of the Atlas Novus published without the text on the verso.
(Van der Krogt, I, 9600:1; Burden 248).
