[Armenia]. GALANO (Clemente). Rome, Typis Sacrae Congregationis de Propaganda Fide, 1658-1661 and 1960. 2 tome, 1st in 2 parts), in 3 vol. in-folio, [32] f. -531 p. + [21] f., 438 p. + [20] f. - 771 p., 18th c. ivory vellum, smooth spine, gilt title, (worm work on spine, bindings disbound, headbands worn, corners dull, russeting and browning, 1st vol. unbound, stamps crossed out on titles). An important work, entirely bilingual in Armenian and Latin. This is the major work of Clemente Galano (1611-1666), an Italian theatin missionary who spent several periods in the East, notably in Constantinople and Georgia, where he learned Armenian. He taught this language at the Pontifical College in Rome. In this work, the author draws on Armenian, Greek and Latin sources to recount Armenian history and argue for the unity of the Armenian Church with Rome. Galano has been accused of falsifying information about Armenian political and ecclesiastical history. The work is of particular importance as a primary source, since it uses documents that have since disappeared. The first part, entitled "Prima pars historialis", is dated 1690; the second part, entitled "Secunda pars controversialis", is given in two volumes published in 1658-1661.
