[Byzantine Empire]. [Sixteenth-century book]. MANUEL II Palaeologus (emperor of Byzantium). Praecepta educationis regiae ad Joannem filium, ex Jo. Sambuci v.c. bibliotheca, Joan. Leunclavio interprete. His adjecimus Belisarii, Neritinorum ducis, ejusdem argumenti librum... Basileae, ex officina P. Pernae, 1578. In-8, 451 p., [6] f. (index), [sign. a-z8, A-F8], recent ivory vellum-style softback with flap, smooth, muted spine (endpapers missing, title faded, spotting at beginning of vol. then sporadic angular spotting).
Greek text with Latin translation of the Treatise on Education (p.24-134) by Manuel II Palaeologus (1350-1425), followed by "Orationes" by the same author, which make up the bulk of the volume. Although announced in the title, the treatise by Belisario Acquaviva d'Aragona was published separately and forms a second part of some copies, but does not appear here (cf. USTC 665196; our copy conforms to the BnF record 30874239).
Provenance: Paris convent of Friars Minor (early handwritten note on title).
