The 1916 archaeological expedition to Van led to the study and excavation of two niches dug into the Van cliff. The excavations brought to light important inscriptions attributed to Sarduri II, the Urartan king, particularly those from the western niche, providing invaluable information on the history, culture and royal constructions of Urartu. The book is complemented by 27 plates, 7 of which reproduce cuneiform inscriptions discovered during the excavations, and 20 photographs documenting the archaeological finds, reliefs and niches of the Van cliff.
