[Ukraine]. BEAUPLAN (Guillaume Le Vasseur de). Carte d'Ukran - Lot 104
[Ukraine]. BEAUPLAN (Guillaume Le Vasseur de). Carte d'Ukranie contenant plusieurs provinces comprise entre les confins de Moscovie et les limites de Transilvanie. A Rouen, chez Jacques Cailloue, [1661]. 1 copper-engraved map (42.5 x 53 cm), hand-colored (right and lower margins short, minor restorations, small stains not serious). Rare map of the Ukraine by Beauplan, published with a privilege from the King of Poland. It illustrates the Ukraine and surrounding regions under the Kingdom of Poland, stretching from Muscovy to the west. It is bounded to the east by part of the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, by "Walachia" and a region of Russia, to the north by the Black Sea and to the south by Lithuania. The map features two decorative cartouches, including a title cartouche with five figures in traditional costume and the Polish coat of arms. Produced by Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan, it is the first to mention the name "Ukraine" in its title. It comes from his work Description d'Ukranie, first published commercially in 1660, with a private edition of 100 copies printed in 1651 for the author's family. Some copies of the commercial edition (considered the second edition), as well as the 1661 and 1673 reprints, include this map of the Ukraine. Four states of this map are known: the first two published in Rouen in 1660 and 1661, and two others in Paris under Gérard Jollain's name in 1673 and 1686. The first state appears in the 1660 edition of the work, while the second appears in the 1661 edition, often accompanied by an inset map of the Crimea. It also appears to have been sold separately, without inset, and in some composite atlases, folded only once (Cf. "Cartographic depictions of Ukraine. Part I: Beginnings, Beauplan and Beyond", in Maps in History, 2023, (No. 77). This copy corresponds to this second state.
