[Belgium]. GOETHALS (Georges). Plan van Gend gemeéten en gegraveérd in 't jaar 1796. Gend, P. F. de Goesin, 1796. 1 engraved plan on copper (52.5 x 74 cm.), hand-colored (cracks reaching engraving, creasing at corners). Plan of Ghent, measured and engraved on copper in 1796 by Ghent cartographer Georges Goethals, providing an image of the city at the end of the Ancien Régime. It features a decorative cartouche. A highly accurate plan, both in terms of survey quality and representation. It is also of great historical importance, offering a glimpse of 18th-century developments such as the destruction of the city's fortifications, the creation of a complete link to the sea and the establishment of new penal institutions.
