[Photography]. [Germany]. ZUR ERINNERUNG an den 10. August 1861. In-folio, period brown basane decorated with crisscrossed cold-stamped fillets, smooth mute spine, boards bordered with multiple gilt zet cold-stamped fillets, gilt title to upper board (defects including rubbing, torn cuffs).
Most probably a unique album intended for the heir to the Hanover throne.
It commemorates the feat accomplished by German swimmer Gerrelt Janssen on August 10, 1861, off the island of Nordeney (East Frisia). Crown Prince Ernst-August, son of King George V of Hanover, then aged 16, swam too far during a storm while staying in Norderney and found himself in danger. Gerrelt Janssen noticed him, jumped in and saved him from drowning, and his feat preserved the direct royal succession. Janssen was awarded a medal, and a monument still commemorates his rescue.
The album comprises 12 full-page laminated photographic prints, 11 of which are albumin prints (approx. 18 x 29 each) offering various views of buildings on the island, and of the beach, and at the beginning of the volume Janssen's portrait on salted paper (approx. 22 x 17 cm.).
Attached is an autograph letter signed E. Risse, in German, dated Nordeney, August 10, 1862. Addressed to the young prince, it pays tribute to this collection.
