[Paris]. [BRAUN (Georg)]. Lutetia vulgari nomine Paris, urbs - Lot 54
[Paris]. [BRAUN (Georg)]. Lutetia vulgari nomine Paris, urbs Galliae maxima... [Cologne, between 1593 and 1623]. 1 copper-engraved plan (34 x 38.5 cm. on 49.5 x 53.8 cm. sheet), Latin text on verso (restorations to center fold, snags on 2 corners in margin, very slight soiling in margin).
Beautiful copper-engraved elevation plan of Paris, originally published by Sebastian Münster in 1530 and later included in Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg in 1572. The present copy most probably comes from one of the editions published between 1593 and 1623, with the Latin text on the reverse (Boutier, p. 97-98).
This plan features an elegant title cartouche with the coat of arms of the city of Paris. At bottom left, a man dressed in the style of the 1560s-1570s greets two ladies, hence the name Plan aux trois personnages. On the right, a simple cartouche features a versified text in French about the city.
(Boutier, 15.If-i).
