[France; Belgium]. [FRIES (Laurent)]. Gallia. Tabula III Europae (titles on verso). [Lyon, Trechsel, 1535]. A woodcut map, approx. 32 x 37 cm. with inscriptions outside the frame, colored (very small wormholes in margins, slight soiling in margins). A highly decorative and curious map, depicting France and Belgium under the names of their ancient parts: Gallia Aquitania, Gallia Lugdunensis, Gallia Belgica and Celtogallatia Narbonensis. Typographed text on 2 verso pages, framed by large woodcuts. Born in Alsace around 1490, Laurent Fries worked as a map editor with Gruninger from 1520 to 1525. Based on the works of Ptolemy and Waldseemuller's 1513 edition, this map was first published by Gruninger in 1522.
