[Celestial map]. [SEUTTER (Matthäus)]. Planisphaerium coeles - Lot 18

[Celestial map]. [SEUTTER (Matthäus)]. Planisphaerium coeleste. [Nuremberg, ca. 1730]. 1 copper-engraved map, (51 x 61 cm.), hand-colored (wetness, clumsy reinforcement, missing top of map). This celestial map depicts the stars of the northern and southern hemispheres in the form of allegories, animals and scientific instruments, following the Firmamentum Sobiescianum sive Uranographia (1687) by Johannes Hevelius and inspired by the works of Georg Christoph Eimmart. In addition to the hemispheres, it features seven diagrams illustrating astronomical concepts, the phases of the moon, cosmic models by Brahe, Copernicus and Ptolemy, and a representation of God the Creator surrounded by putti.
